Abstract
Choosing
the correct solution for the problem of industrial fume emissions,
including volatile organic compounds, should involve more than
simply a ’tail-end device’ approach. The
abatement system should be more than a metaphorical dustbin in the
back yard. On the contrary, there are areas where the installation
of the right abatement system can improve overall operating
efficiencies. The selection of any appropriate abatement system is
a highly complex matter covering several legal, commercial and
technical considerations. It is therefore essential to seek from
air pollution control specialists who are experienced in
interpreting the regulations. It is also wise to choose the right
expertise that can provide a range of abatement systems and give a
totally unbiased and tailor made solution. This
should include an evaluation of both a system’s capital and
running costs, together with a ’standard lifetime’ assessment,
incorporating maintenance and spares replacement expenditure,
consumables expenditure and depreciation, in order to determine
the true overall cost and investment value. Fundamental to this
analysis should be an assessment of how energy consumption can be
minimised by maximising primary heat recovery and considering
secondary heat recovery.
