Biography With a first degree and PhD in Inorganic Chemistry from Manchester University, Dr Buckley has occupied senior technical positions in a range of industries from ceramics through to chemicals. More recently he worked in the desiccants industry, supplying major pharmaceuticals and medical device manufacturers, before moving to Sanner, initially as Business Development Manager for the UK but now as Executive Director Innovation. Company Profile Based in Bensheim, Germany, Friedrich Sanner is a leading international producer of plastic parts. With a core business in injection moulded closures and medical device parts, Sanner now produces and markets a range of innovative products for the pharmaceutical and healthcare industries.

Abstract Active and Smart materials are finding increasing use in the packaging of pharmaceuticals and medical devices. As demands grow for greater protection from environmental influences such as moisture, light and oxygen, so packaging technologies change. In addition, the need to protect drugs from counterfeiting is a major international issue. Furthermore, indications of the state of packaged items are also now in demand and new and innovative materials are being developed. The presentation will focus on recent advances in packaging materials and how they are used to meet these challenges.
