Biography

Matthias Birkhoff is Director Business Development of Ing. Erich Pfeiffer GmbH, Germany. Matthias started his career in pharmaceutical sales in a major multinational pharmaco before joining Pfeiffer ten years ago.

Before getting involved in Business Development Matthias was in charge of sales in the AsiaPacific region. Matthias studied medicine at the University of Dusseldorf, Germany and holds a nursing degree.

Abstract

A novel approach in ophthalmic drug delivery is subject of the paper submitted by Matthias Birkhoff, Director Business development of Ing. Erich Pfeiffer GmbH, Germany.

Matthias describes in his paper the existing technologies available for both preserved and unpreserved ophthalmic preparations, taking advantages and constraints of recent developments into account, before taking a closer look at the technology behind a dispensing device with a purely mechanical function to allow a multidose application of unpreserved ophthalmic preparations.

The paper shows details of how ophthalmic solutions can be kept sterile during use, plus whether and how the systems are compatible with current filling technologies.
