Polymer formulations for novel medical and pharmaceutical devices

RAUMEDIC AG, recently formed from the long established medical tubing division of REHAU AG, is a young flexible company full of bright people and new ideas, operating from state of the art class 7 clean room facilities near Nuremburg.

Current research and development highlights include:

1. Antimicrobial polymer formulations

Raumedic has developed a range of new material formulations incorporating antimicrobially active silver into different polymer formulations including:
- Polyurethane
- Polyamide
- Silicone

In vitro studies have been completed documenting the desired silver ion release over the period of use and biocompatibility and cytotox data is available for selected formulations.

2. Polymer extrusions with low-friction surfaces

Raumedic has developed special surface technologies for extruded components in silicone and thermoplastics. This involved collaboration between the companies R&D facility, external coating specialists and German universities.

Improved friction coefficients provide the following benefits:
• Non-stick properties,
• Smooth surfaces,
• Reduced encrustation properties,
• Easier insertion and sliding and/or
• Higher chemical and mechanical resistance.

3. Polymers with barrier properties

Based on ongoing research Raumedic has produced a database of common polymer barrier materials with very diverse permeability properties. This enables the company to develop and manufacture value added products with improved barrier functions to customer specific requirements.
 
With 2-C sandwich injection moulding technology Raumedic offers an additional platform for the development and production of customer specific products with optimised permeability properties. Furthermore, both oxygen and water vapour permeability can be reduced.
