Abstract

FDA and more recently EMEA have provided guidelines to characterize the nasal spray systems for pharmaceutical use.

The “active” performances of the devices, i.e, dose, spray characteristics such as Droplet Size Distribution (DSD) and Spray Pattern (SP) are evaluated on a lab test bench with the nasal spray systems that are accurately and repeatedly actuated by machines.

However In real life patients are acting somewhat differently from machines. The talk will investigate the influence of the patient actuation force and speed profile on those key performances and will introduce a new nasal spray developed by Valois ; Equadel. The presentation will then deal with non preserved formulations. Recently concerns have increased over the use of preservatives in nasal formulations. CPS a modular mechanical multidose system for the application of preserved and unpreserved solutions via nasal, topical & dermal and oral routes developed by Pfeiffer provides an efficient solution by enabling pharmaceutical companies to formulate without preservatives.

The presentation will end by giving a few hints on the potential developments and future of such devices.
